The Grade I listed property was reinstated as high quality single residential accommodation for the first time in several decades, after having been converted to offices in the 1950s. The project, led by Studio Director Il’ic Testoni whilst working at BDP, encompassed the careful refurbishment of the main property as well as the mews at the back, with the adaptation of the internal spaces to the requirements and expectations of a modern family. The conservation strategy focused on sensitive repairs to the fabric, having care to reuse traditional techniques and materials. New structural interventions were kept to a minimum, and concealed in areas where loss of original fabric had already occurred in the past. New services have been introduced, taking advantage of every available cavity and interstitial space, and a new lift was sensitively inserted in a section of the building previously impacted by unsympathetic modifications.
