St. Asaph House

Situated along a tree-lined residential street in Brockley at the south edge of the Telegraph Hill Conservation Area in Brockley, this house required a total rethink of the social and dining spaces of the ground floor to suit the evolving requirements of the family inhabiting it. We set out by removing unsympathetic walls and partitions that had been added in the past, freeing up the flow between internal rooms and enabling a clear reading of all the spaces. New glazed doors have been added to create connectivity and openness, whilst at the same time enabling the flexibility to close out spaces when required, for privacy or special family events. A focal space was created along the circulation spine, at the junction with the kitchen, a sort of open coat-and-storage room lined in oak timber slats and characterised by linear LED lighting that provides an area of calm and reflection at the heart of the house. Special care has gone into materiality and colours, matching intense greens and grey paints with natural timber and soft beiges.

The best thing about working with vitua was feeling like I had someone I trusted alongside me throughout the design and build. From the outset, Veronica really listened to what I wanted and asked lots of great questions about how we used the spaces in our home. She and Il’ic also brought a bit of artistic flair to the final designs that I would never have got on my own. Veronica was fabulous at sourcing options for me when it came to materials and gave me lots of choice, just taking lots of the hassle away from me. She was also great with the builders, making sure things were done the way we’d agreed and “holding my hand” all the way through to snagging and final handover.
