Pendrell Road is a quiet residential street at the southern end of the Telegraph Hill Conservation Area in Brockley, populated by substantial three storeys terraced houses rich in history and detailing. The transformational project being undertaken here expands the family accommodation by extending kitchen/diner to the rear into the garden return, and by converting the constrained basement in order to create a suite of new, habitable spaces. Significant work to the structure of the building is required, including new underpinning, a lowered basement slab and further structural support to the enlarged spaces at the back. A new staircase with bespoke joinery is proposed, connecting the spaces at the lower and ground floor and at the same time celebrating the process of walking between different levels, enjoying the cascading daylight from a carefully located new rooflight.
Working with vitua through an extended design iteration process helped us land exactly the space we wanted. They held our hands through the design and build phase, from navigating the needs of the planning application in a conservation area to pragmatically working through the inevitable challenges to design required as the project got underway.
