This little gem of a project for two twin sisters nestled in a leafy street off Clapham Common, London SW11 focused on the transformation of all rooms to improve the residential accommodation, increase internal floorspace and make the best of a constrained plot.
Both bedrooms were reconfigured, removing a chimney breast to obtain additional space, maximising the internal space and fully refinished to a high standard. The existing shower room was reconfigured to optimise the available space, adding a new bath in the process, and the hallway was stripped out in its entirety and refitted with bespoke, floor to ceiling storage cupboards.
The most dramatic changes however were dedicated to the spaces at the back, where the existing Victorian side return housed a kitchenette at the end of its life and a tiny lounge with little natural light. The design focused on maximising opportunities for spatial reconfiguration, natural light and long vistas. The garden return was infilled, retaining a small courtyard that provides light and ventilation to the rear bedroom as well as an alternative outdoor space. The built envelope at the rear was extended by approximately 4m to create an open plan kitchen/diner/lounge incorporating a kitchen island where the hob is located, maximising the utilisation of the worktop. Large sliding doors open into the rear patio and are echoed by a window opening into the lightwell, providing cross ventilation when required. A long rooflight focuses onto the dining area.
The treatment of the new extension is in simple fair-faced yellow stock brick, reflecting the character of the area and complementing the patio.
