Hampden Road is a leafy residential street in the heart of Beckenham, nestled between the historic High Street and South Norwood Country Park. This domestic extension project was progressed concurrently with the adjacent property (Hampden House One) and provided a wonderful opportunity to develop the brief requirements for the two families, appreciating their different aspirations and expectations, and working with each to achieve a design that is unique and responds to their own expectations. This project was developed around a maximised single space at the rear, reconfiguring the existing kitchen and opening it up to a very spacious family room with large glazed doors leading into the garden. The use of large rooflights was essential to bring natural light as deep as possible into the floorplan and the use of stained oak timber flooring throughout helps unify the space and create a sense of continuity. The steel framed glazing is a nod to the industrial character of some of the house’s features and helps maximise the amount of light into the space. The external wall of the extension was built using reclaimed bricks from the old shed, reducing the carbon footprint of the project and offering a beautifully tactile finish to the rear elevation. It was a pleasure to develop with either set of clients the relationship between the historic character of this elevation and the modern brickwork of the adjacent property.
