Chapel House Barn

The restoration and creative adaptation of this Grade II listed barn in the heart of Hertfordshire required a sensitive approach to the complex history of this building. Dating back to the XVII Century, the original timber framed threshing barn has been extended in the 1800s by adding stables to either side and was converted into a catholic chapel in the 1940s, a use that remained in place until as late as 2013.
The proposed conversion to residential use requires careful consideration of the special character of the building, the contribution it makes to the Conservation Area it sits within, and the significance of the historic fabric. The key challenge is the integration of sustainable fabric and services upgrades to preserve the building in the long term, enhancing the quality of the internal environment in a sensitively and creatively.
