Hampden Road is a leafy residential street in the heart of Beckenham, nestled between the historic High Street and South Norwood Country Park. The project explored the opportunities to transform the ground floor of this mid-terraced house to create a series of defined but interconnected spaces linking visually the front room to the rear garden. As the internal spaces have been adapted and opened up, a new extension to the rear connects the social areas to the garden and enables the space to flow out into the new patio. A generous window seat provides space for relax and intimate views to the garden, animating the rear elevation with an integrated planter. Rooflights flood the kitchen and dining space bringing in views of the sky, creating a special play of lights and shadows. The enfilade of family rooms is interconnected with glazed doors and solid sliding panels, articulating the spatial connections and providing flexibility. Original features such as arched openings, covings and fireplaces have been retained and integrated sensitively with the new architectural language, allowing a dialogue between old and new.
“We are a busy family with growing teenage daughters, one of whom is neuro-diverse, in need of more and different space both to come together and be apart. We were in two minds whether to move or improve and we’re so glad we chose the latter! Through extensive early workshopping Veronica and Il’ic showed us how with some extending, remodelling and thoughtful use of space, we could achieve everything we needed. And we are so glad they did – we now have a home which not only is more generous, it gives us a variety of space options mirroring the variety of our family’s needs.
Our book-lined dining room is tranquil workspace one day, intimate dining room the next, and the dance floor during parties! And the flexibility extends throughout the different rooms. The garden mini-room – sitting part in the house / part within the garden, is a particular favorite with all the family – so there’s a bit of a fight over that one!”
